The hubbub about the work-from-home policies of Yahoo and Best Buy has died down. Now it’s time to look at some hard stats on just how prevalent telecommuting is.

The numbers speak for themselves: 65% of employers allow staff members to work remotely.

That’s according to a new survey of 1,000 U.S. business professionals conducted by market research company uSamp.

The results also reveal one overriding trend about working remotely that shouldn’t come as a surprise to many companies: Employees love it.

The majority (67%) said they feel more productive working from home, compared to just 7% who feel less productive.

And 69% of respondents said working remotely is liberating.

But despite the fact that workers have access to work remotely and love it, only 27% reported doing so. Their reason: They were worried about colleague perception.

What’s the future of telecommuting?

You’ll recall that both Yahoo and Best Buy were in the doghouse (at least in many people’s eyes) a couple weeks back for their decision to eliminate the telecommuting options for employees at their companies.

We examined experts’ opinions on the decisions and also outlined the questions to ask to determine if working from home is right for your company and employees.

The results of one study are nothing to base an ongoing perception around. But it’s nothing new for companies to allow their staff to telecommute. The trend appears to be moving more toward allowing telecommuting rather than prohibiting it.

What do you think? Does your firm allow staff members to work from home? In what situations? And what has your experience been?
