Don’t believe everything you read on your government documents.

The Form I-9, which the government requires new employees to fill out to authorize their ability to work in the U.S. and to verify their identity, is set to expire on Aug. 31.

But the government recently announced that a new, revised form they’re working on won’t be ready by then.

In the interim, companies can continue using the current form available from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

What’s the holdup? On August 22, the government opened a new 30-day public comment period for the form.

The agency is in the process of making the I-9, which was last updated it 2009, clearer and more user-friendly, as well as adding optional areas for staffers’ email addresses and phone numbers.

Public comments are due by Sept. 21.

We’ll keep you posted about what happens next.
