For HR and benefits pros (and many managers), communicating with upper management can be a challenge under even the most ideal circumstances. But when the exec in question is known for his or her intimidation tactics, it can be a real nightmare.

Luckily, there are certain things you can do to get your message across to even the most overbearing members of your firm’s top brass. Here are three things to remember:

1. Don’t veer off course

Upper management is always pressed for time, so avoid getting too detailed or venturing off into areas that aren’t essential to what you’re there to discuss.

After you’ve finished covering your main idea, then it’s OK to check in to see if there are any additional questions that need to be addressed.

2. Be ready for interruptions

It’s important not to get rattled or thrown off by interruptions when talking to execs.

These are people who got to the C-suite by asking lots of questions, so be ready for this to happen at any time during your conversation.

Also, because upper management can get pulled away at any given moment, make it a point to cover the most critical information right from the start.

3. Anticipate likely questions

Because there’s a good chance you’ll be questioned, it’s a good idea to take a proactive approach.

One way: Ask your co-workers to try and stump you by tossing out a series of questions at random on the topics you’re going to present on or discuss with upper management.
